Commendations & Complaints

 

Each year Marionís police officers have thousands of contacts with people. In some cases individuals may question why an incident was handled in a particular way, they may wish to acknowledge the employees involved or they may disagree with the actions of an employee. Public confidence in the criminal justice system depends, to a large extent, on the trust that people have in their law enforcement officers. For that reason the Marion Police Department takes citizen questions, concerns and compliments seriously.

The Marion Police Department will forward commendations to employees and their supervisors so that the employee may be recognized. It is also the departmentís policy to investigate allegations of employee misconduct. The Marion Police Departmentís Administrative Division Commander is responsible for coordinating investigations related to alleged employee misconduct and commendations for exemplary service. The Administration Division Commander reports directly to the Chief of Police. Feel free to review the departmentís Internal Affairs Audit for the past year.

Commending Police Employees

When you receive service that you feel is worthy of a commendation, let us know. Please fill out a Citizen Commendation/Complaint Form, from the bottom of this web page. You may return the form in person, by mail, fax or email, or you may call the police department. When contacting the police department, include all the information you can remember about the outstanding service. The employee will be notified of your commendation as will his/her supervisors, and a copy will be placed in the employeeís personnel file.

The Complaint Process

The Marion Police Department values community feedback and is dedicated to providing the best police service possible. If you feel a police department employee has treated you improperly or are concerned about any police department action, please fill out a Citizen Commendation/Complaint Form from the bottom of this web page. You may return the form in person, by mail, fax or email, or you may call to schedule an appointment. Please do not interrupt a police officer in the performance of their duties to question actions.

When a complaint is received the Administrative Division Commander will send a letter or registered e-mail to confirm the complaint has been received and assigned for investigation.
